About Us & Oreo's Story
We have all found
   new homes!
Thanks,
Everybody!!
Posh Puppies Rescue is a 501 (C)-3 non-profit No-Kill
animal rescue organization~our goal is to save as many
dogs and puppies as possible from certain death in the
Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Kansas commercial kennel
industry.
Commercial Kennels supply the pet shop trade across
the United States.  Most of the puppies which find their
way to our rescue come to us because they were not
purchased by the pet shops because they were too big,
too small, not the right color or sex, have a very slight
physical defect or just because they weren't the
"flavor-of-the-day" on the day they were presented for
sale.  These darling, precious babies are given 2
chances to be sold~if they are not sold, they are
returned to the commercial kennel to await their fate.
Most of the time, they are destroyed~many at only 12
weeks of age because their "shelf life", as it's called, has
expired.  You see, the pet shops will only purchase the
puppies when they are between 8-11 weeks of age~after
that, they are no longer the cute little puppy in the
window.  These are the babies who've fallen through the
cracks and are destined to be destroyed~It is a terrible
waste of thousands of precious lives every single year.
This is where our rescue comes in!!!
Over the last several years, we have been fortunate
enough to save the lives of hundreds of these adorable
little angels who have gone on to find wonderful, loving
homes with someone who will love them furrrever!  The
commercial kennels who allow our rescue to save their
unwanted puppies have many different types of dogs,
both purebred and "designer breeds", as well.
Some of the breeds we regularly have in our rescue are:
Pug, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel,
Poodle, both Standard and Miniature, Chihuahua,
Boston Terrier, Maltese, Malti-Poo, Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkie, Yorkie-Poo, Lhasa Apso, Morkie, Shih-Tzu,
Shih-Malt, Cava-Poo, Shih-Poo, Lhasa-Poo, Shiba Inu,
Japanese Chin, Cockalier, West Highland Terrier Westie,
Scottish Terrier Scottie, Dachshund, Boxer, German
Shepherd, Labrador, Golden Retriever, Goldendoodle,
Labradoodle, Mastiff, Pomeranian, French Bulldog,
Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie, Puggle and Chug.
We also get many retired breeder adult dogs,as well.
These are the dogs who've given their entire lives, some
as many as 10 years, to produce litter upon litter of
puppies while living in a tiny, cramped pen.  Many of
these unfortunate souls have never known the kind,
compassionate touch of a human and have never had
proper hygiene or dental care.  Most of them require
hundreds of dollars of veterinary care and weeks to
months of socialization before they, too, are ready to
finally find a home of their very own.  We help as many
of them as we possibly can because if they are not
rescued, they are rewarded for their years of service by
being destroyed.  Please find it in your heart to help us
help them.
Oreo's Story
People often ask me why I do what I do for the
animals~how can I stomach the emotional
roller coasters that come with rescuing and
rehabilitating the abused, neglected, sick and,
sometimes, dying animals which make their
way to us from the commercial kennels in
Missouri and the surrounding states?   For me,
the answer is simple...Oreo.
Oreo is a Pug whose life began just as many
puppies born into commercial kennels lives
begin~he was born in the kennel of an Amish
puppy breeder and was then sold to a large
commercial kennel broker at the tender age of
only 8-weeks-old.  He then traveled on a tractor
trailer, along with nearly 200 other puppies,   to
be sold to the pet shop trade in New York.
Once he'd been sold to a pet shop, all was well
until one particular day when someone in that
pet shop happened to notice that he was
losing his hair~by the bucketloads!!!
It was soon determined that poor Oreo had demodectic
mange~a genetically inherited parisitic skin condition
which, in many cases, is recurring and incurable and
incredibly uncomfortable for the animal.  Once the diagnosis
was made, Oreo was whisked off the salesroom floor and
thrown in a cage in the back room of the store~where he sat
to await his fate and suffered WITHOUT ANY VETERINARY
TREATMENT for nearly 12 weeks!!!
I found out about his plight quite by accident, through a
friend of mine in another rescue.  I was working with
another wonderful rescue organization at the time and,
thankfully, they were all for us pursuing and orchestrating
the lifesaving rescue of this incredibly loving angel who was
now nearly 5 months old!!!
The ensuing seven days were some of the saddest and
most emotionally draining days of my life as I begged,
pleaded and cried over the phone to whomever would listen
to me about saving this puppy's life.  The Amish breeder, I
was told, wanted him back because he was afraid of being
"turned in" for releasing animals in such a deplorable
condition.   They said he was going to be "put down"~a
term I've since come to realize means he would most likely
be clubbed to death.   As I groveled and pleaded and swore
I'd never divulge a word about where he had come from, if
only they would spare his life, the tears streamed down my
face.  How could this be allowed to happen?  All I could
think about was this poor, precious baby~all alone awaiting
his execution day.  Finally, on the eighth day of this long,
arduous journey, I was told he could be released~as long as
I kept my promise of keeping his initial whereabouts a
secret.   It's a promise I've never broken.......
After nearly a week of anxiously awaiting the day I
would finally lay eyes on this  sad, forgotten soul,
I could barely contain myself as we made the long
journey to finally bring him home.    When we
arrived, I was handed a cardboard crate and,
inside, was the precious baby Pug you see
pictured in these photos.  His entire body was
gray from head-to-toe and his skin was the texture
of an elephants'.  It was so bloody and
puss-ridden from the secondary bacterial
infection which had attacked his skin in its
weakened condition that I could barely touch him
without him crying out in pain.   The stench of his
infected skin was almost too much to bear.
As deplorable as his condition really was that
night, the only thing that mattered to me was that I
had him, here with me and he was finally SAFE.  I
said a silent prayer right then, knowing there was
no one in the world who could ever take that away
from him again.  As I stood there, looking down
into that cardboard box, all I could see were his
big, brown eyes looking up at me~they were eyes
brimming with gratitude.
Today, nearly  3-1/2 years later, those eyes still look at me with the same gratitude I saw that night.   It took
nearly three months and lots of love, patience and medication, but Oreo was finally a happy, healthy, normal
Puggy boy!  His coat grew in beautifully~although it's a bit sparse in a few areas, he looks wonderful!
Thankfully, he bears no emotional scars from his horrific beginnings.
After all we went through together, I just didn't have the heart to say goodbye~this precious angel, who had
touched my heart so deeply, became my baby boy for good and the true inspiration for my motivation to
help these forgotten dogs and puppies who are born and raised in the commercial kennel industry each
year.    He is the poster-child for why I do what I do for these animals.  All I have to do is look into his eyes
and my strength is renewed~each and every day!

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS.........

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation
from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up
as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your
entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do
understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget
it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember
that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative,
ask yourself if something might be bothering me.
Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the
sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will
grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please.
Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face
this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there,
because I love you so.
Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy
and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller,
less joyful experience without God's critters.
